Engadget have just published pictures of the what is possibly the forthcoming Microsoft Argo - the so-called iPod Killer.
And its pretty easy to see where they got their inspiration....

We've had to sit on this one for a while, but it's about time we showed you guys at least one possible form Microsoft's Argo / Xbox-branded wireless portable media player could take. Sent to us from an insider working on the project, we're told the device pictured above is indeed a part of "Project Argo," and from what we can tell it definitely jibes from the blurry pics we caught a while back; though if the piece from earlier today is to be believed, this could just be one of numerous Microsoft portables.
It's hard to tell just how much larger the screen on this thing actually is, but it does indeed appear to be a 4:3 aspect ratio display, and could be 3, even 3.5-inches wide. Keep your eyes peeled, you know we do our best to have this stuff as early as possible.

Microsoft Corp. is reportedly readying an iPod killer set to hit retail shelves in time for the end-of-year holiday shopping season.

Microsoft's portable music and video player is rumored to include wireless connectivity, enabling users to download songs without being tethered to a PC, according to a report Thursday from The New York Times.

Microsoft faces an uphill battle in its efforts to take on Apple Computer Inc., which shipped 8.5 million iPods in the second quarter of 2006 alone, marking a 61 percent increase from its sales for the same quarter in 2005. Apple is due to announce its third-quarter earnings July 19.

Microsoft has already introduced initiatives to compete with Apple's iTunes music service. In May it launched along with MTV Networks the Urge music store as part of the Windows Media Player 11 public beta. The Urge store allows users to purchase songs for US$0.99 and albums for $9.99, as well as buy a $15.00 monthly subscription. The service is not compatible with Apple Macs or iPods.

iPod Killer?

You know, it’s entertaining to read about the next iPod Killer simply because you learn to appreciate the truly innovative products time and again. It’s not that all companies and products are useless. No, not one bit. It’s just that their idea of innovation around the ever popular iPod is silly.

Few days ago, Microsoft releasing its own variation of the iPod Killer grabbed headlines....again. How long have we been hearing about this? This time around, the news was passionate and more assuring than previous times. Then again, Microsoft’s unclear launch plans were disheartening, but totally expected. As much as Microsoft wishes, there’s no way it can crush the iconic iPod.
