Net income jumped 47.5 percent in Apple Computer Inc.'s third quarter as shipments of iPod digital music players grew 32 percent to 8.1 million units, the company said on Wednesday.


Cupertino-based Apple, which has a campus in Elk Grove that employs hundreds, said its profit for the quarter was $472 million, or 54 cents a share, on a 24 percent increase in revenue to $4.37 billion.



Both exceeded a forecast by analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who projected a profit of 44 cents a share on $4.4 billion in revenue.
